Year 3 and 4 Topic newsletter

Why do so many people visit the Mediterranean?

This term we have a geographical focus for our topic that is based on several ‘Learning Challenges’.  Our topic is called ‘Why do so many people visit the Mediterranean?’.  It encompasses everything from geographical skills such as using an atlas, to discovering all about different aspects of Mediterranean culture.  We kick started our topic with a food tasting wow day, where the children were able to sample all sorts of different foods produced in the Mediterranean.  They were all very eager and tasted food such as figs, dates and sun-dried tomatoes.  Our finale will be a Mediterranean Fair where you will be persuaded to come andvisit the Mediterranean – a date for this will be sent out soon.

In science we are investigating the question, ‘How does Usain Bolt run so fast?’   Again, our learning will be led through a series of ‘Learning Challenges’.   We will be investigating our own performance as runners and learning all about how our bones and muscles work together.  We will also be learning about the effect of healthy diet and lifestyle.

Our ICT work will be closely linked to our topic work such as gathering and interpreting data about weather, climate etc.  We will also be creating multi-media presentations as part of our finale.  Another focus for us this term is programming – the children will be using a selection of iPad apps to learn how to programme and problem solve.

In R.E. we will be discovering the importance of being fair and how rules are an integral part ofsociety.

We look forward to your continued support for what will be a very exciting term!

Many thanks,

The Year 3 and 4 Team
