Role of the Governors
School Governors
Our school governors work conscientiously alongside the staff to ensure that the school continues to improve, becoming the best it can be.
In order for you to gain a better understanding of the role of a governor, read the following information alongside "meet the governors" and "governance structure".
Background
School governors are drawn from different parts of the community, such as parents, the Staff, the Local Education Authority, the Community and other groups. This helps to ensure that the governing body has sufficient diversity of views and experience to fulfil its duties effectively.
Responsibilities
The governing body has a range of duties and powers and a general responsibility for the conduct of the school with a view to promoting high standards of educational achievement including setting targets for pupil achievement, managing the school's finances, making sure the curriculum is balanced and broadly based, appointing staff, reviewing staff performance and pay and many more.
The main Governing Body of Fosse Way Academy meets regularly throughout year.
The Governing Body uses digital technologies to review and amend policies rather than meeting face to face. These policies are then ratified during the meetings.
Other Governors with specific responsibilities fulfil their obligations on an ad-hoc basis. For example, the Special Needs Governor will work with our SENDCO as part of the role, as well as spending time in school alongside the children in order to gain a greater understanding of the issues. Similarly, the premises lead works with the School Business Manager and Site Manager in order to plan ahead and address issues that arise, and the Safeguarding Lead works with the staff and Headteacher in order to audit, review and improve the Safeguarding procedures in school. When necessary, our Attendance Governors work together in order to respond to applications for authorised absence.
Attendance
The latest attendance figures can be seen by downloading the document above.
Pecuniary Interests
During the AGM at the start of each Academic Year, the members of the Governing Body have to declare any Material or Pecuniary Interests they might have relating to themselves or a member of their family and Fosse Way Academy. These declarations are reviewed before the start of each subsequent meeting and audited by our chartered Accountants. These details can be downloaded in the document above.
