Design and Technology

t Fosse Way Academy, we believe that Design and Technology equips pupils with the creativity, resilience and problem-solving skills needed to thrive in an ever-changing world. Our carefully sequenced curriculum inspires pupils to design, make and evaluate innovative products that solve real and relevant problems, while developing confidence through practical, hands-on learning.

Our curriculum progressively builds pupils' knowledge, technical skills and understanding through an iterative design process of designing, making, testing, evaluating and improving. Children are encouraged to think creatively, take risks, reflect on their work and learn from mistakes, developing resilience alongside practical expertise. They learn to select appropriate tools, materials and techniques safely, while building a secure understanding of structures, mechanisms, textiles, electrical systems and food technology.

Retrieval opportunities and the explicit teaching of technical vocabulary ensure pupils build upon prior learning and retain key knowledge over time. Pupils also explore the work of influential designers, engineers and inventors, helping them understand the impact of design and technology on everyday life. By the time they leave Fosse Way Academy, pupils will be confident, creative problem-solvers with the knowledge, skills and ambition to design purposeful products and apply their learning beyond the classroom.
