Maths
At Fosse Way Academy, we believe that mathematics is an essential life skill that enables pupils to make sense of the world around them. Our ambitious, carefully sequenced curriculum develops confident, fluent mathematicians who can reason, solve problems and communicate their thinking using precise mathematical vocabulary. Through a mastery approach, we foster resilience, curiosity and a belief that all children can succeed in mathematics.
Our curriculum builds progressively on prior learning through carefully planned small steps, using the Concrete, Pictorial and Abstract (CPA) approach to develop deep conceptual understanding. Regular retrieval opportunities, including daily Flashback activities, help pupils retain key knowledge, while skilful questioning and adaptive teaching ensure all learners are appropriately supported and challenged. Pupils are encouraged to explain their reasoning, make connections and apply their mathematical understanding to real-life contexts across the wider curriculum.
By the time they leave Fosse Way Academy, pupils will have developed fluency, confidence and resilience in mathematics, alongside the ability to think critically, solve problems efficiently and apply their knowledge successfully in everyday life and future learning.
