Music
At Fosse Way Academy, we believe that music is a powerful and enriching part of every child's education. Our curriculum is designed to ensure that all pupils develop a love of music through listening, singing, composing, performing and evaluating a wide range of musical styles, traditions and genres. We aim to provide an enjoyable, inclusive and inspiring musical education that builds confidence, creativity and self-expression, while developing pupils' understanding of the interrelated dimensions of music, including rhythm, pitch, tempo, dynamics and structure.
Our Music curriculum has been carefully designed to provide ambitious and progressive learning opportunities for all pupils. Through the Charanga scheme, children revisit and build upon key musical knowledge and skills, allowing them to develop confidence and proficiency over time. Pupils explore music from different cultures, historical periods and traditions, encouraging respect for diversity and an appreciation of music's significance across the world. Regular opportunities to sing, play tuned and untuned instruments, compose, improvise and perform enable children to apply their learning creatively whilst developing resilience, collaboration and performance skills.
Music is valued throughout the wider life of the school and extends beyond weekly lessons. Whole-school singing assemblies, class performances, productions, concerts, choir and enrichment opportunities provide children with meaningful experiences that celebrate music and encourage participation. We also make purposeful links across the curriculum, using music to enhance learning in subjects such as mathematics, languages, dance and history, helping children make meaningful connections across their learning.
Our Music curriculum promotes creativity, communication and personal development whilst contributing to pupils' spiritual, moral, social and cultural understanding. Through high-quality teaching and memorable musical experiences, children develop confidence as listeners, performers and composers. By the time they leave Fosse Way Academy, pupils will have developed a secure understanding of musical concepts, an appreciation of a wide range of music and the confidence to express themselves creatively, enabling them to continue enjoying and engaging with music throughout their lives.
