Science

At Fosse Way Academy, we believe that science inspires pupils to develop a lifelong curiosity and fascination about the world around them. Our carefully sequenced curriculum provides engaging, practical and enquiry-based learning experiences, enabling pupils to build secure scientific knowledge alongside the skills needed to work scientifically.

Working scientifically is at the heart of our curriculum. Pupils progressively develop their ability to observe, classify, identify patterns, carry out fair and comparative tests and research, while being encouraged to ask questions, make predictions, analyse evidence and draw conclusions. Key scientific vocabulary is explicitly taught and revisited, helping pupils to communicate their understanding confidently and accurately.

Our curriculum builds on prior learning, with Knowledge Mats supporting the retention of key knowledge and vocabulary. Through practical investigations, discussion and purposeful questioning, pupils develop their understanding of scientific concepts and learn to identify and address misconceptions. We also celebrate the contributions of significant scientists and explore the relevance of science to everyday life and the wider world.

By the time they leave Fosse Way Academy, pupils will be curious, confident and inquisitive scientists with the knowledge, vocabulary and enquiry skills to understand the world around them and continue to explore it with enthusiasm.
