Look what we have been doing in Years 5 and 6
Y6 Primary Engineers' Day at the Air and Space Institute, Newark
On Monday 1st June and Monday 8th June, Y6 travelled by train from Hykeham to Newark Castle to take part in a Primary Engineers' Day. Our challenge was to design a train carriage with a working brake system. We were doing this because, over 150 years ago on the train line between Newark and Thurgarton, the Newark brake trials took place. The purpose of the trials was to select the safest braking system; a system that is still in use on trains today. We worked with students from A.S.I to create our train carriage with its braking system before holding a competition in the afternoon to find the best one. We were also allowed to eat our lunch on the plane they have, take part in the take off safety demonstrations and visit the cockpit. It was a brilliant day.
Clay workshop - January 2026
In January, we were very fortunate to have participated in clay workshop with a local artist called Gill Cosford. Gill worked with groups of pupils throughout the day to mould and sculpt rainforest animals which linked in well with our work on the Amazon rainforest. The final piece of artwork has been mounted ready for display in school and it looks wonderful. How many different rainforest animals can you spot?
Y5 Trip to watch the NK Academy show - December 2025
In December, Y5 pupils went to NK to watch their school show. It was a great opportunity to visit a local secondary and enjoy a brilliant performance of 'High School Musical.'
Y5/6 Trip to watch SRPA show - March 2026
At the start of March, the whole phase walked to Sir Robert Pattinson Academy to see their performance of 'The Wizard of Oz.' We had a fantastic time watching the performance and eating our picnic lunches. It was also great to see so many ex-Fosse Way pupils participating in various roles from the lead character to the sound team.
Y5 Trip to Priory Witham's Panto: The Mirror's Revenge - March 2026
Y5 pupils were also fortunate enough to be invited to watch 'The Mirror's Revenge' at Priory Witham. This is always a fantastic panto, made even better by some ice cream during the interval. The children thoroughly enjoyed the show and were very impressed by the performance.
Y5 and Y6 trip to The Holocaust Centre - November 2025
In November, as part of our History work around World War 2, the whole of Y5/6 took a trip to the National Holocaust Museum and Memorial. It is always a very poignant trip and is handled with fantastic sensitivity by the expert staff there. As part of our visit, we followed in the footsteps of a 12 year old Jewish boy called Leo and explored his experiences of prejudice and discrimination leading up to World War 2. It was a very thought-provoking trip.
Y5 trip to Lincolnshire showground for Lincolnshire Day - October 2025
At the start of October, Y5 visited Lincolnshire Showground to celebrate Lincolnshire Day. We took part in a wide variety of activities: from first aid to flower arranging and recycling to rocket launchers. It was a brilliant day with lots of new experiences for the children.
Y6 Residential to PGL - September 2025
At the start of Y6, we visited PGL at Caythorpe for an action-packed 3 days of residential. We did raft building, climbing and shelter building amongst other things.
We learnt how to work together in teams, tried our hands at the daring activities and bonded over the campfire.
